Illustration for a French fairytale called 'The Lost Children.'
It's similar to Hansel and Gretel except the role of witch is replaced with a devil and his wife.
"Jeanette had Jean pretend not to understand how he was to be put on the sawhorse. The Devil's wife showed them, and Jean tied her on and cut her throat. They took the Devil's gold and silver and fled in his carriage." (wikipedia)
This is the scene illustrated. I'm not sure who to be more scared of, the devil or these children. lol
